Heart, The: An Online Exploration
From the moment it begins beating until the moment it stops, the human heart
works tirelessly. In an average lifetime, the heart beats more than two and a
half billion times, without ever pausing to rest. Like a pumping machine, the
heart provides the power needed for life.
This life-sustaining power has, throughout time, caused an air of mystery to
surround the heart. Modern technology has removed much of the mystery, but there
is still an air of fascination and curiosity.

has improved reading skills; it has helped define and develop values like
honesty, thoughtfulness and tolerance; and it has entertained and enlightened.
Without question, "Highlights for Children" has been one of the most
remarkable stories in the history of American publishing. While educators,
analysts and business people may debate the various reasons behind the
periodical's success, all the children know is that they like it.

improve schools and raise educational standards.
Since its founding in 1973, IRE has been committed to a
more equitable distribution of educational opportunities and achievement for all
children across lines of race, ethnicity, language, religion, gender, economic
conditions, and geography. We believe that schools, families, and communities
have a shared responsibility for the academic and social success of all children
and that partnership is the means to exercise these shared responsibilities
collaboratively. Partnership requires respectful, trusting, and equitable
relationships among diverse participants, a supporting policy framework,
allegiance to democratic principles, and a commitment to sustained struggle to

Center: The Early Childhood Education Network
The LiteracyCenter.Net™: The Early Childhood Education Network™ Inc. is a

Inc.
According to research conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and
Human Development (NIHHD), American children are not receiving the foundation
they need to master basic skills. While their global counterparts are excelling
at math, science, and the adoption of multiple languages, the majority of
American children are having trouble learning to read English.
The
Nation's Report Card: Fourth-Grade Reading 2000, released by the US
Department of Education on April 6 2001, states that less than one third of the
nation's fourth-grade students are proficient at reading. The results also
pointed to a widening gap between the best and worst readers. Education
Secretary Roderick Paige cited the new data as evidence that federal education
policy has not addressed the needs of low-achieving students. " After
decades of business-as-usual school reform, too many of our nation's children
still cannot read," said Secretary Paige.
It is the mission of the LiteracyCenter.Net to make certain that no child is
left behind because of a lack of high-quality education material. It is its goal
to provide a new Web-based platform for Daycare, Preschool, First-grade, and
Second-grade teachers that simplifies their lives and provides their students
with the best in Web-based education.

Math Magic
MathMagic is a K-12 telecommunications project developed in El Paso, Texas by
Alan A. Hodson. It provides strong motivation for students to use computer
technology while increasing problem-solving strategies and communications

10-12) to trigger each registered team to pair up with another team and engage
in a problem-solving dialog. When an agreement has been reached, one solution is
posted for every pair.
MathMagic has received wide ideological acceptance by hundreds of past
FidoNet users (spearheaded by Carol Hooper), because it addresses most of the

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as
"the Nation's Report Card," is the only nationally representative and
continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various
subject areas. Since 1969, assessments have been conducted periodically in
reading,
mathematics,
science,
writing,
U.S.
history,
civics,
geography,
and
the arts.
Under the current structure, the Commissioner of Education Statistics, who
heads the
National Center for Education Statistics
in the U.S. Department of Education, is responsible by law for carrying out the
NAEP project. The
National
Assessment Governing Board, appointed by the Secretary of Education but
independent of the department, governs the program.
NAEP does not provide scores for individual students or schools; instead, it
offers results regarding subject-matter achievement, instructional experiences,
and school environment for populations of students (e.g., fourth-graders) and
subgroups of those populations (e.g., female students, Hispanic students). NAEP
results are based on a

NEA
Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE)
NFIE envisions a future in which public education in America provides all of its
students with a world-class education. Created by the National Education
Association in 1969, NFIE empowers public education employees to innovate, take
risks, and become agents for change to improve teaching and learning in our
society. The foundation awards grants to educators who propose innovative and
promising ways to help all students experience academic success and reach their
full potential, especially those who have been historically underserved by
society's institutions. NFIE conducts research on these efforts and publishes
reports on its findings.
The foundation believes that students' success depends on what teachers know
and can do. The focus of NFIE's programs, therefore, is two-fold. First, NFIE
seeks to ensure that the three million teachers in the nation's public schools
have opportunities throughout their careers to keep up to date with new
knowledge, new technology, an ever-changing society, and changing expectations
for what all students should know. Through its programs, the foundation works to
weave continuous learning into the fabric of teaching. Second, NFIE's programs
are designed to identify those educators who do the extraordinary in serving
their students and their profession, to provide them with the means to explore
their best ideas, and to support them as role models for their colleagues.

PencilFlag.com
PencilFlag.com is a free site that began shortly after the 9/11 attack on
the World Trade Center.
The idea was simple - to create a memorial flag that could be
accessible to everyone, one that could be downloaded from computers and
attached to something everyone has - a pencil.
The response was overwhelming and mostly from schools and daycares. It
seemed that the "Remember" pencil flag was helping children cope with the
events by utilizing their creativity and at the same time promoting
discussion.
Since then the little "Remember" pencil flag has been all over the world and
their website enjoys thousands of visitors each month. They currently offer
other pencil flags as well: "Fun Flags," "Holiday Flags," "Occasion
Flags," and "Specialty Flags." One of the most popular is “The Love Garden”
pencil flag, created with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in mind.

Pitsco Innovative Education
Pitsco, Inc. was founded in 1971 by three industrial arts teachers who realized
a need for technical and curriculum support in the industrial arts education
field. With an initial investment of only $50, Harvey Dean, Max Lundquest, and
Terry Salmans operated the fledgling company on evenings and weekends during
the next four years. In June of 1975, Harvey Dean dedicated himself full time
to the company after purchasing Lundquest's and Salmans' shares, and by the end
of the year, Dean, his wife, Sharon, and two part-time employees comprised the
entire Pitsco staff. Pitsco has continued to grow and devote itself to
technical education, and today includes sales in all 50 states, Canada, and
several foreign countries. Since its inception, Pitsco has led the industry in
supplying quality technical education equipment and curricula, and we look
forward to providing teachers with both innovation and commitment into the next
century and beyond.

Preston was first established in 1963. We published the first series of books
"Primary English - A Structural Approach" for years 1 to 6. It was an
instant success! Sales totaled 156,000 copies in our first year of operation.
Since then, we have expanded at a breathtaking pace. With 35 years of
educational book publishing behind us, we are indeed one of the oldest and most
established indigenous publishers in this region. From a small staff size in
1963, we now have a combined staff strength of about 240 in our three
operational offices: Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.
